Back Pain

Back Pain and Chiropractic Care

Back pain can make walking and everyday actions hard to do.

Back pain is very common, with around 80% of the population expected to experience back pain. Back pain can interfere with your life in various ways. Back pain can affect your sleep, work, driving, and every aspect of your life. When you experience back pain, your body is making you aware that something is wrong and needs to be corrected. Too often, individuals will turn to pain medications — but they only mask the problem and do not deal with the actual cause of your back pain.

Back Pain Signals Something is Wrong

Around 10% of your nervous system can feel pain. The rest of your nervous system deals with how your body functions, controls your muscles, makes sure your organs are working, fights off viruses, and is responsible for everything. When you feel back pain, you are not just experiencing pain. Your nervous system is not functioning optimally, and depending on the cause of the pain, you may experience other issues.

Some people may experience immediate pain, typically from a car accident, a fall, or injury. For others, the cause of their back pain may have taken weeks, months, or longer before they felt pain.

Causes of Back Pain

  • Subluxations
A subluxation is a misalignment to the vertebrae in the spine. Subluxations are the most common cause of back pain. When the bones in your vertebrae are misaligned, they will put pressure on the nerves in the spine and nerves exiting the spine. This can irritate the nerves, or even pinch the nerves. Chiropractic adjustments correct the subluxation and restore the nerve signals to normal.
  • Accidents and Injuries
Accidents and injuries can damage muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, nerves, and your spine. There will be inflammation as well, which will put pressure on the nerves, cause pain, and restrict movement. Dealing with back pain caused by an injury means treating the soft tissue injuries to prevent, or break up scar tissue, as well as correcting subluxations to the spine. Whether the cause of your back pain was an auto accident, whiplash, fall, lifting an object, or another injury, prompt care by a chiropractor is the recommended treatment.
  • Disc Degeneration
Disc degeneration develops over time. Injuries left untreated, subluxations not corrected, and even bad posture can result in the spine not moving correctly or having a restricted range of motion. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that will get progressively worse if not treated. Other disc problems include herniated discs, bulging discs, extruded discs, and more.

Treat Back Pain As Soon As Possible

Back pain should never be ignored. In addition to experiencing back pain, untreated back pain can also weaken your immune system, interfere with organ function, and lead to other health problems. If there are any misalignments in the spine (subluxations), the vertebrae in the spine will not be able to move properly. This leads to disc degeneration which can lead to osteoarthritis if not corrected.
